PATH CLOSURE NEAR GEORGE ROGERS PARK
LAKE OSWEGO – On Saturday, February 2, 2008 the City Maintenance Department became
aware of a landslide near George Rogers Park. The slide deposited approximately 5 cubic yards
of soil, rock and debris on the City trail that connects George Rogers Park to Old River Road.
The City immediately closed the pathway to pedestrians and cyclists.
The City believes the steep bank above the trail is not stable at present, and that additional
ground movement could occur as a result of seasonal rainstorms. Therefore, the City will not
reopen the trail until potential hazards to trail users are eliminated.
The City, with assistance from a geotechnical engineer, evaluated the site to better understand
the risk and possible causes for the slope instability. The slope failure originated on private
property above the trail and corrective action to reduce the potential hazard is necessary on
the slope before the trail can be reopened. The City has met with the representative of the
owner and has requested that a proposal be prepared and submitted to the City within two
weeks, outlining the corrective steps that will be taken to stabilize this area. Until that time,
the City will maintain the fence and signs that close the trail.
The City anticipates corrective measures will take several months to design and implement.
There is no firm date for reopening the trail at this time, but the City remains hopeful that the
problem can be corrected so that the trail can reopened in the Spring.
