CITY TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE FOR AN UPDATED FLOODPLAIN MAP
AND CODE

LAKE OSWEGO – On Thursday, February 28, 2008, the City of Lake Oswego will hold an open house
to discuss proposed changes to the City’s floodplain map and related floodplain regulations. While any
interested citizen is invited, residents living near the Tualatin River, the Main Canal and Oswego Lake
will be most affected by the new changes.

The Open House will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 380 A
Avenue.

The new floodplain map changes are based an extensive study of the Tualatin River drainage basin that
results in a 2.5 foot increase in the base flood elevation (100-yr floodplain) around Oswego Lake. The
floodplain regulations require that the floor level of new homes be one foot higher than the base flood
elevation. Existing homes are not required to raise flood elevations except in cases where major
remodeling occurs. The map and code changes are necessary for the community to remain eligible for
flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.

The areas affected by the new map include properties abutting Oswego Lake, the main Oswego Lake
canal, and the Tualatin River. Also affected is the area between the canal and the Tualatin River that
flooded in 1996. The new map depicts a base flood elevation that is slightly higher than the flood water
elevations observed during the 1996 flood event. The proposed map changes will not affect properties
along the Willamette River and Springbrook Creek.

The Lake Oswego Planning Commission will hold a Public Hearing regarding the changes on Monday
March 10, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. The City Council hearing for adoption of map and code changes is
tentatively scheduled for May 6, 2008. The February 28 open house is the best opportunity to learn
how the changes might affect your property.
